Noise Pollution
" The Cock he crew in the morning,
He crew both loud and shrill,
And I awoke in California
Many miles from Spancihill."
So goes the song "Spancihill" from Bobby McMahon of County Clare.
Isn't it beautiful to hear the Cock crowing in the morning?
But not where I live - it appears that one or other of my neighbours have objected to the early morning crowing of my cockerel.
I have been keeping poultry for a good number of years - approximately 15 years. Now one or other of my neighbours have complained to the local Council that "the noise of the crowing cockerel from my premises at 4.00 a.m. was causing a nuisance."
The County Council have written to me and have stated that "the noise was so loud, so continuous, so repeated, of such a duration or pitch and occurring at such times as to give reasonable cause for annoyance to a person in any premises in the neighbourhood or to a person lawfully using any public place". To this end any person including the Council can make a complaint to the District Court and the Court may order the person or persons to take what ever action or measures to reduce the noise.
Failure to comply or on conviction in the District Court could lead to a fine of €3,000 or imprisonment of up to 12 months or both.
Wexford County Council gave me the opportunity to rectify the matter and to reduce the noise levels of Roosters kept at my premises so that they do not cause annoyance. This I did by building units inside my shed and insulating the walls and the roof to make the building sound proof. So I await the breeding season to see what the noise levels will be.
Just wondering has any other members of the Society experienced any complaints such as I have? If so, what action was taken?
A very interesting topic for disussion don't you think?
Andrew Thorpe,
Wexford.

Thank You
May I through our Website and Newsletter say a big thank you to all who helped to make our show a success. Beverley for all the secretarial work (no easy job), to Melvyn and the team who set up the cages and put them away after the show. It was very pleasing to have a lot of extra help taking down the cages and it was very much appreciated, as it meant we all got home earlier!
Many thanks to all Judges and Stewards as well as the exhibitors who are helping our show grow in numbers year by year, to Marian for the beautiful flower display and Trophy table. As usual, Paul's workshop went down well, ably helped by Andy. Síobhan was great at keeping everyone fed. Thanks to everyone who supplied Tombola prizes. It all helps to swell the bank account as it costs so much to run such a show.
We also thank our Sponsers and Gurteen Collage Principal and staff.
Your Grateful President,
Patricia.
